Overview

Dawn Pac are retail packers of fresh and value added meat products. In 2003 we were commissioned as principal structural engineers for the construction of a £35 million, 210,000 square foot factory and office block development on a Greenfield site.

We were to provide a full design service on this project employed directly by the end user Dawn Pac.

Brief

  • Arrange and supervise a detailed site investigation of the development site
  • Recommend a foundation solution for the building
  • Design and detail the foundations and floor slabs
  • Tender Design and detail of the steel framed factory and office block complex
  • Tender and review steel fabricators quotations
  • Oversee the steel design
  • Design all secondary steelwork to support plant and equipment
  • Design and detail the external works to include silo bases, pits, retaining walls and ramps
  • Attend site meetings during the construction phase

Solution

  • Window sampling boreholes to determine ground conditions and obtain soil samples for geo-technical analysis
  • Piled foundations and reinforced concrete ground beams for the heavily loaded office block and reinforced pad foundations for the factory
  • Steel portal and lattice roof trusses to the factory, incorporating movement joints due to the length of the building and the requirement for structural fire breaks
  • Beam and stick construction for the office block with “Slimfloor” construction for the floors
  • Precast retaining walls to the perimeter of the building around loading docks
  • Reinforced concrete yard slabs and ramps
